NHG EI Service - Cataract

Cataracts are the most common cause of poor vision in the elderly in Singapore.
The Eye Institute offers procedures such as phacoemulsification, foldable intraocular lens implantation and the use of multi-focal lenses as some of the treatment methods that ensure a successful cataract surgery experience for the patient.

Cataract surgery is highly successful, with over 90% of patients regaining good vision. Contributing factors to this high success rate include advances in surgical microscopes, wound suturing, effective prevention of infections and early detection. Most cataract surgeries are performed as a day surgical procedure without the need for hospital ward admission.
